Letter was written by Robert L. Fitzpatrick about his experience at the 75th reunion of the Battle of Gettysburg. Letter reads, “Asheville NC Aug 9- 1938- 91 ½ years old. Dear Mrs. Gray, I want to thank you for the Pictures you sent me. I think they are fine. I sure did enjoy the Reunion, I thought the yanks done everything they could for us old Rebs, I will send you a carbon copy of the Resolution I offered. I offered a resolution 6 or 7 years ago to have a joint reunion but could not get it passed, some of the Federal soldiers are the best friends I have. I am getting on very well the Dr said I was. I found out I had a heart. I hope it will be good and not take me off. I was not well but I enjoyed meeting you people. With kind regards, RL Fitzpatrick 57 Wantauga St”. Envelope is addressed to, “Mrs. Wm. Gray, Box 264 High Point NC” and is postmarked, “Asheville N.C. Aug 10 10:30 AM 1938”.

Copy of resolution reads, “RESOLUTION OF THE UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS INTRODUCED BY GENERAL ROBERT L. FITZPARTICK C.S.A. EXPRESSING HIS THANKS FOR COURTESIES SHOWN AT GETTYSBURG REUNION / WHEREAS, the Confederate Veterans attending the joint Reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Confederate Veterans have been so royally and handsomely entertained that we desire to express our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude for the courtesies extended. Now, therefore, let it be resolved by Confederate Veterans attending the aforementioned Reunion. 1. That we thank and express our gratitude to the Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt, president of the United States, for his thoughtfulness and consideration to us; that we thank the Honorable Harry H. Woodring, Secretary of War and the United States Army, and particularly the Surgeon General for the care and attention which they have given us, and the Quartermaster General and his Corps for their precise military thoroughness in preparing for our comfort. 2. That we thank the State of Pennsylvania, His Excellency the Governor, and all representatives of the State of Pennsylvania for untold kindness and human interest. 3. That we deeply appreciate the efforts of the Committees who have worked long and faithfully for making the Reunion a success, and also to the various Railways and Transportation Companies who have been so considerate of our comfort while enroute. 4. That we thank the members of the Grand Army of the Republic who have exemplified such a faithful and brotherly spirit and wish for them all happiness and pleasure in their old age. I move the adoption of the foregoing Resolution, General Confederate States of America, Asheville N.C. / Brigadier General R.L. Fitzpatrick, Chief of Artillery on the Staff of General Claypool, Commander in Chief, United Confederate Veterans”.

Soldier records on Fitzpatrick have been lost and we have not been able to identify which Robert Fitzpatrick this is. [sm]
