All the officers carry the Model 1860 Field & Staff Officer’s sword. Visible behind the monument are enlisted men holding horses. The monument to the 73rd New York looms behind the group with the fireman and soldier clearly seen.

Image is in excellent condition with fine clarity and contrast. Lower left corner is marked “NO. 9101 GEN. WILEY & STAFF (2ND BRIG N. G. P.) / CAMP MEADE, GETTYSBURG, JULY 12-19 1902.”

Framed the piece meas. approx. 26.00 x 21.00 inches. Image has a cream mat with a brown under mat. The image size is 16.00 x 11.00. Frame is new and does have some chipping to the top edge.

General John A. Wiley was born in 1843 and served in Company C, 8th Pennsylvania Reserves (37th Pennsylvania Infantry) during the Civil War and was discharged in 1864. He then went to Washington where he served as a clerk and was mustered out in 1865.

In 1871 he enlisted as a Private in the Oil City Grays in Venango County, Pennsylvania. By 1873 he was commissioned Captain of his company and then steadily rose to the rank of General. He eventually retired in 1909 and died in December of that year.    [ad]
