A nice clean, early battlefield pickup 3” Schenkl artillery shell in wonderful condition.  Iron body is smooth and clean with no active rust. Percussion fuse has a dark patina with about ¼ of the rim missing; probably chipped off after being fired. The anvil and slider are also missing. Most of the patent information stamped on top, “J. P. SCHENKL / PAT. OCT. 10, 1861” is visible among the nicks and dings.

An old tag, made on a manual typewriter, reads “Found / at Middleridge / Nov. 1863” was found inside the shell.  Middle Ridge is believed to be one of the spurs of McPherson’s Ridge at Gettysburg.  [jet]
