This relic is ten brass Burnside .54 caliber shell casings stacked one inside the other. They are in overall good condition for dug casings. Shows a darkened green patina. Top casing has flattened edge and there is some chipping throughout.

On battlefields where the Burnsides were present it's not unusual to find cartridge cases "stacked" together like ice cream cones. Because the Burnside carbine did not have an ejection system to remove spent shell casings, soldiers would use sent casings to remove the hot shell casing from the bore, until they had a stack too long to manage, then discard the bunch.

This relic was dug in Gettysburg and was part of the local Davis family collection.  [sl]
