PAIR OF US/CS 4.52 SPHERICAL SHELLS FROM GETTYSBURG GAR POST #9

$1,295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M25758

This is a pair of 12lb spherical artillery shells that have been painted gold and marked as follows.

The first shell has approx. 0.75 of an inch high lettering done in black paint with red highlights and reads “INSTITUTED SEPT. 26 1891” and JULY 1, 2, 3, 1863.”

The second shell has black lettering of about the same size as the first and also done in black but this time with gray highlights. This shell reads “CHARTERED 38 MEMBERS.”

Both shells are in very good condition with only light wear and excellent clarity on the lettering. The first shell does show some light pitting.

It is not known what organization these shells commemorate. Both the GAR Post and the Sons of Union Veterans Camp was up and running in Gettysburg by 1891. It is believed that these can be for a ladies auxiliary of some kind.  [ad]
