This item comes from the collection of the late Ron Miller who was a Gettysburg resident and relic hunter. From the collection of Ron Miller, brother of noted Gettysburg relic hunter Ed Miller. Mr. Miller was born in Gettysburg and was a teacher by profession. He walked and hunted the surrounding farm fields his entire life in search of relics. He was a member of the Adams County Historical Society and the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania.
This large fragment is half of the nose section of a large 20-lb Parrott shell found by Mr. Miller in the Benner’s Hill area east of Gettysburg and just northeast of Culp’s Hill. The fragment displays half of the fuse hole in the nose with some visible threads for screwing in the fuse itself. Surface has light surface rust and pitting but is in nice relic condition.
The only 20 pound Parrott guns on the Gettysburg battlefield were in Taft’s 5th New York Independent Battery which was located along the Baltimore Pike facing east toward the Culp’s Hill/Benner Hill area. [ad]
