Hardcover book in blue cloth covers that are heavily stained and worn on the edges. Title is in worn gold on the spine. Full title is “LEAVES FROM THE BATTLE-FIELD OF GETTYSBURG. A SERIES OF LETTERS FROM A FIELD HOSPITAL AND NATIONAL POEMS” by Mrs. Edmund A. Souder, published in Philadelphia in 1864.
Volume meas. approx. 7.25 x 5.00 inches and runs 144 pages with one missing page (numbers 11 & 12) towards the front. Binding is starting to loosen but so far it is holding together.
The front part of the book contains Mrs. Souder’s letters home to her husband from the battlefield hospitals. She mentions the conditions in the field hospital as well as the town. In one letter she mentions a number of wrecked limbers, wagons and dead horses on Chambersburg St. She also mentions some of her fellow workers as well as members of the Sisters of Charity who gave help to the wounded. The back part of the book contains poems of a patriotic and reflective nature.
