FRAMED COLLECTION OF GETTYSBURG PHOTOGRAPHS

Item Code: 1054-489

An attractively framed collection of photographs taken on the battlefield that show how early visitors and returning veterans saw it. The photos were printed with captions in the lighter areas, or with light captions on darker ground, and sold in a number of formats. Twenty-two of them have been matted in this frame in three columns with two vertically oriented photos of the Soldier’s National Monument and U.S. Army Monument at center. The dates of the original images vary. A Tipton credited view of the Wills house shows a horse and buggy and is likely early. A view showing the Buford and Reynolds statues must postdate 1899. In general the images as printed likely date 1900 to 1915 and show some of the most visited spots: the Jenny Wade house, the statue of Warren on Little Round Top, the High Water Mark, etc. One of the Confederate Whitworth cannons is featured at top center. The history of the battlefield and the national park are almost as studied as the battle itself. The frame is oak and ready to hang. The images as matted are roughly 11 by 14 inches and the frame overall is 16 ¾” by 20 inches. [sr]
