Gettysburg battlefield stereoview by Mumper, captioned “View on Round Top.”  This appears to be a view in the Slaughter Pen area, with Plum Run in the foreground with the famous “split rock” where Alexander Gardner photographed dead Confederates.   Two men in civilian attire stand in the background among the boulders.  Details are sharp, with some fading along the top and bottom edges.  There is a 1/8” stain on the far right edge of the right side photo.  The backside is an advertisement for Mumper and lists his various battlefield views for sale.  The cardstock is very good, with some bowing along the center.

The Mumper family owned a photographic studio in Gettysburg and Littlestown from 1864-1948.  Founder Levi Mumper was a Civil War veteran who served in the 127th Pennsylvania Infantry.  He lived in Gettysburg and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.  Like William Tipton, he produced popular photographs of Civil War battlefields, to include stereoviews in the late 1800s.  [JC]
