Large format albumen photo by Mathew Brady that has been professionally framed. The subject is the well-known image of three Confederate prisoners posed at the breast works constructed along the high ground near the Seminary. The image was recorded after the battle; on July 15 according to author William Frassanito.
The photo shows three well-clad southern soldiers that are no doubt soon to be on their way to a northern prison camp.
The image itself measures 7-3/4” x 8-3/4” and mounted on a 10” x 12” mat. This is an unusually large version of an image that is more often encountered in stereo card format. The framed piece is 14” x 16” overall.
Photo contrast is slightly on the light side but all details remain very clear. There is a noticeable piece missing from the upper, right corner. Luckily the location of this does not detract as it is a “piece of the sky” and a matching piece of paper stock was added by the framer to make the loss less noticeable. The edges of the original mount show wear and corners are rounded. A notation is on the mount in blue pencil, “From Rand Stereo / Conf Prisoners captured at Gettysburg.”
A large version of an iconic Gettysburg photograph; professionally framed. [jet]
