In the days before radio, television and the internet orations were a form of entertainment. One of the best orators of the Civil War period was Edward Everett.

Everett was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on April 11, 1794. Everett attended Boston Latin School in 1805, and then briefly Phillips Exeter Academy. At the age of 13, he was admitted to Harvard College. In 1811, at age 17, he graduated as the valedictorian of his class.

During his long and varied life Everett served as a Pastor and then a teacher at Harvard where one of his students was Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was also a writer and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as Governor of Massachusetts and in the US House of Representatives, the US Senate, as US Ambassador to Great Britain, president of Harvard College, Secretary of State and in his last years as an orator.

Everett died on January 15, 1865 and is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The first of these two CDV’s is a lithograph of Everett posed with one arm upraised. He wears a dark civilian suit with a light vest, white shirt and dark bowtie.

Image has good contrast and clarity. Mount and paper have light surface dirt. Mount corners are clipped.

Reverse is printed with “EDWARD EVERETT. AS HE APPEARED IN DELIVERING HIS ORATION ON WASHINGTON.”

The second image is of Everett from life. He is posed with one hand resting on the back of a chair with the other behind his back.

Image contrast is good. Clarity is good. The mount and paper have some toning. Mount corners are clipped and top and bottom are trimmed.

Reverse has old pencil inscription detailing Everett’s accomplishments and noting that he spoke at the cemetery dedication at Gettysburg.

Both images come mounted on a sheet of paper giving Everett’s history. CDVs are held in place by picture corners and can easily be removed and replaced at will.     [AD]
