On June 30, 1863 during its approach march to Gettysburg, the Union 2nd Corps camped at Taneytown, Maryland. Over the years this camp has yielded many relics including the button offered here.
Two-piece button in good condition with some of the original gilt remaining in the low areas. There are no cracks or dents in the face. Eagle with breast shield bearing the letter “R” is clearly visible despite scattered areas of green discoloration.
Reverse has a crease at center and a bent shank with some thread still attached. Raised mark in a depressed channel is mostly obscured by dirt and discoloration but looks to be W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS. [ad]
