Full title is “Report Of The Select Committee Relative To The Soldier’s National Cemetery, Together With The Accompanying Documents As Reported To The House Of Representatives Of The Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania, March 31, 1864.” Book was published in Harrisburg in 1864. Dark brown cloth covers with gold embossed lettering and decoration. Spin has small chip at center with small piece missing at bottom. Light wear on edges. Frontispiece is map of Gettysburg battlefield showing troop positions on all three days by Andrew B. Cross. Book runs approx. 110 pages. Nice unfolding map of cemetery opposite page 39. First page is inscribed in ink “Steuben Jenkins, Wyoming, Pa. Sept. 3, 1864, Presented by Hon. Harry Hakes, H.R.” Book describes the layout of the cemetery, the process of unburying and re-interring remains of the dead and it also lists what the different items were found on the bodies of the unknowns. It is a really interesting book and should be a part of any serious Gettysburg library.
Steuben Jenkins was a poet-historian from Wyoming, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1819, admitted to the bar in Luzerne County in 1847 and served three terms in the State Legislature. Dr. Harry Hakes, besides being a medical doctor was also a genealogist, historian and a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature being elected in 1864.
