Item Code: 868-03

Paper pamphlet is in overall fair to poor condition. It meas. approx. 5.50 x 8.25 inches and runs 52 pages.

This history was written in 1863 right after the discharge of the regiment and is not a volume we have seen before. The paper cover is cream colored and decorated with a thin linear border. The title reads “THE VOLUNTEER’S MANUAL: TEN MONTHS WITH THE 153 PENN’A VOLUNTEERS.” The number “153” in the title is housed inside of an 11th Corps insignia.

The authors of the pamphlet are William Simmers and Paul Bachshmid both of whom served as Lieutenants in the regiment. Booklet was published in Easton, Pa. by D. H. Neiman in 1863.

Volume has no back cover. Spine is made of blue paper and is sewn to the volume. Interior has pages that have discolored with age and are chipped in the upper right corner with several minor horizontal tears on the edges. Despite the loss of the back cover being gone all the text appears to be present.

Interior text related the 9 month service of the 153rd and their service at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg with a regimental roster at back. Tucked inside the front cover is a flyer from 1909 advertising the more substantial regimental history written by William R. Kiefer. Flier was folded and has torn along fold line into three pieces.

The ID comes in with the roster at the back of the pamphlet. At the top of the page where the roster for Company G starts there is a pencil inscription that reads “PAPA’S COMPANY.” There is an “X” next to the name of Sergeant William Allen with a pencil notation that reads “UNCLE WILL.” Further down the roster of Company G is an “X” by the underlined name of Private Lemuel Ayres. It is assumed that Ayers was the “PAPA” mentioned in the inscription and “UNCLE” Sergeant Allen was his brother-in-law.

Quick internet research reveals that Lemuel Ayers did marry a girl named Ellie E. Allen. Both William Allen and Lemuel Ayers served the whole 9 months with their regiment.
