A trove of books, ledgers & papers relating to the career and affairs of Albon A. Lewis, as seaman and politician, from the dating from his years as a seaman in the 1840s through his career as a legislator in the mid-1860s.

The book is the New York "Comptroller's City report/ 1864", in half lea. with marbled boards with "Hon. Albon A. Lewis" leather name plate attached to front cover. Front cover detached, else VG w/light wear at extremities. The ledgers include three expense book labeled "B", "C", & "D", containing consecutive entries running from 1858 through 1864, along with a fourth unlabeled ledger which contains tax & expense entries through 1865-66. Most entries from these are either personal or of a political nature.

Also included are three small "day' books containing various expenses. There is finally a real estate journal in which is written a lengthy Sunday School Speech [undated]-["Ladies and gentleman and scholars of the Sunday school"].

Loose & miscellaneous papers contain a seaman's certificate numbered and stamped with the seal of from the Collector of the District of New-York. The certificate attests that Albon A. Lewis is an American Seaman aged 21 years, of the height of 6 feet 1 inches, brown hair, light complexion, born in Oneida Co., State of New York…..and is a citizen of the of the United States of America." Dated 6 December 1844. Also contained is an Albon Lewis bill for $56 of sailors clothes and accoutrements, to the firm of "Richmond & Wood, dated 1844, w/"12 m for payment in cash."

Other papers include a seven stanza poem concerning unrequited love. [Final stanza: "I will dig me a grave both long wide and deep/and cover it over with roses so sweet/ I will lay myself down and take a long sleep/ For that's the best way to forget her forget her.] Also a property contract between A.A. Lewis and William Jordan, w/ three stamps [ dated feb. 4th 1867/68/69]green seal affixed. Remaining documents contain a half dozen receipts & a half dozen letters dating from the 1850s and 60s.

Albon A. Lewis is listed in Phisterer as an Allegheny 2nd District Civil War-era assemblyman, and he was obviously a person some regional consequence. An intriguing trove of Allegheny County [NY] documents. The Honorable A. A. Lewis invites and deserves further research.  [jp]
