The first item in the group is a bust view CDV of Capt. Roath in uniform. He wears a frock-coat with turned down velvet collar. There is some foxing on the image but it is not severe. Corners of the card have been trimmed. Back is signed in pencil “Yours Truly, Lieut. J. S. Roath.” Back also has tax stamp and back mark for D. C. Burnite & Co., Harrisburg. With this is his eagle head discharge. This was filled out when Roath was a Sergeant and was re-enlisting as a Veteran. The discharge is dated December 31, 1863. His personal information on the document lists him as 39 years old with fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and standing 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was by profession a shoemaker. The document is boldly signed in ink by the Colonel of the Regiment. Also with the group is the envelope from the State of Pennsylvania that his commission came in. The last item is a hardbound book titled “THE SOUTH VINDICATED FROM THE TREASON AND FANATICISM OF THE NORTHERN ABOLITIONISTS” DATED 1836. The book is in very good condition and runs approx. 314 pages. Inside front page has collector’s information in pencil. The next page has a period ink inscription that reads “Annapolis, MD. April 15th 1864, The property of J. S. Roath. Commessary Sergt. 45th Regt. Pa Vet. Vol.” 

Jacob S. Roath of Lancaster joined Co. B, 45th PA Vol. Inf. as a Commissary Sergeant on September 2, 1861. He was re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on December 31, 1863 and promoted 1st Lieutenant May 21, 1865. He was mustered out at Alexandria, Va. July 17, 1865.
