This original specimen of a common Civil War accoutrement is a Federal New York Depot Model 1858 smoothside canteen in complete and untouched condition. Canteen is identified to Private James H. Bean of Company F, 193rd New York Infantry regiment. James Bean was an eighteen-year-old when he enlisted at Lisbon, NY on March 8, 1865 in Co F, 193rd NY Infantry. He was mustered into service that same day. His service time was short and he mustered out on January 18, 1866 at Harpers Ferry, WV.

His attic condition, maker marked, Model 1858 smoothside canteen is a fine appearing specimen and is the type of canteen issued to thousands of Union soldiers during the war. Referred to as a ‘New York Depot’ style canteen, the canteen was produced by the Albert Jewett firm of New York City, New York and consists of two circular sections of pressed tin formed in an oblate spheroid pattern, soldered together along the rim. The liquid contents were kept cool by means of a wool covering sewn about the canteen. The canteen’s wool cover has aged to a dull dirty-gray color but it is in very complete and super tight condition with no rips, tears or seam separations prevalent. Even along the cover seam stitching is tight and strong.

The identification is painted in white letters on one side of the canteen and reads “Jas. H. Bean / Co F 193 Regt. / _____ / Infantry / 1865”. Some of the painted letters have rubbed off and are hard to discern. Body exhibits only one very shallow dent. Canteen retains its original, five-foot long x ½” wide carrying sling made of white cotton / twill that is sewn along the edges. Sling strap is in poor to fair condition and has turned to a dirty, gray-brown color with normal surface soiling and use. Sling has moderate areas of fraying along the length. The pewter spout is in fine undistorted shape and exhibits the stamped letters of the maker. Iron pull ring and the cork stopper complete and are in excellent condition, as is the original length of iron chain that secures the cork to the canteen iron strap loop. Cork is original. This fine looking identified US Model 1858 smoothside canteen is a great specimen for any military collection or New York display.
