WAIST BELT AND CAP BOX ID’D TO 7TH MINNESOTA SOLDIER WOUNDED AT NASHVILLE

$795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3134

The leather of the waist belt is in good condition. It shows light wear from age and storage but is still supple and strong. The end opposite the buckle had a brass keeper but it was removed long ago, probably by the soldier. Attached to the belt is a very nice Model 1839 oval “US” belt plate with an even and smooth patina. The face shows minor nicks and dents consistent with being worn. Reverse has 100% lead fill and both arrow hooks and tongue.

Attached to the belt is a standard issue Federal cap box in good condition. The outer surface is smooth and clean. The inner flap has both ears and light crazing. The interior has just the remains of the lamb’s wool and no pick. The body of the box is in good condition like the rest of it. Barely visible under the outer flap of the box is a name stencil that can partially be made out.

With the items is a sign made by a previous owner stating that the items belonged to Private Lorenzo D. Emmons. This label mentions a belt, cap box and cartridge box but the latter was not present when we acquired the group.

Lorenzo D. Emmons enlisted as a Private in Company E, 7th Minnesota Infantry on August 21, 1862. Emmons was assigned as a Wagoner to the trains of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 16th Corps on June 31, 1864 but was reduced back to the ranks on September 4, 1864. He was wounded severely in the left thigh at the battle of Nashville in December of 1864 and spent the rest of his time in the hospital. He was finally discharged at Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin on June 30, 1865. After the war Emmons lived in Fillmore County, Minnesota. He was married and had one child. He died of a lung disease on January 18, 1876 leaving a widow and a fourteen year old daughter.

Full military and pension records come with the items described above.
