Leather US cap box in good condition with maker mark.
The leather on the box is supple but also shows signs of heavy use such as creasing on the tab, heavy wear on the belt loops and an overall light surface crackling. Outer flap is solid but has “alligator” crackling over its surface which is heavier on the tab and top of the flap.
The inner flap has one ear and the other is missing but a slightly torn portion remains.
Interior has some lamb’s wool but no pick. The body of the box is good condition with minor surface wear and a maker’s mark of “C. S. STORMS / MAKER.” Brass finial is present at bottom.
Reverse has two complete belt loops that show heavy wear and some surface finish loss. One is torn at top.
With the item is a typed label with the name of the former owner that reads “U.S. GOVERNMENT ISSUE CAP BOX, CARRIED IN THE CIVIL WAR BY CORP. CHRISTOPHER CONLEY, COMPANY “B,” 11TH MICHIGAN VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT. ACCORDING TO THE ANTIQUE DEALER FROM WHOM THIS CAP BOX WAS PURCHASED IN 1996, THIS SOLDIER IS BURIED IN LAKEVIEW CEMETERY, QUINCY, MICHIGAN, BY THE CIVIL WAR MONUMENT THEREIN.”

He was discharged for disability at Nashville on October 18, 1862. After the war he lived in Quincy and was a member of the C. O. Loomis Post # 2 of the GAR. He died there on March 10, 1895.
