IDENTIFIED 1864 INFANTRY CARTRIDGE BOX WITH PLATE – 155th PENNSYLVANIA INFANTRY

$350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-441

This cartridge box is a heavily worn example of the "Pattern of March 1864” infantry cartridge box.

This box is in overall well-worn condition. Outer flap exhibits scuffing and edge wear. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with original leather thong. Closing tab was once sewn and riveted to the flap; it is now missing and a small hole remains where the rivet was pulled out. The inner flap is unmarked. This inner flap retains both “ears” that remain loosely attached. The implement pouch is present and complete. Neither of the cartridge tins remain. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken.  Box is slightly flattened and has paper stuffed inside in attempt to give it shape. Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  Brass finial on the bottom.  Iron buckles are missing.  Box measures approximately 7 ½” x 1 ½” x 6” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball).

The brass cartridge box plate is in good condition with dark patina on face.  Inspection of the plate shows carving in the lead on the back.  Initials “J. B.” and the date “1864”.  The previous owner of this piece identified it to John Balsiger of Company K, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry.  Balsiger was 19 years old when he enlisted on March 30, 1864 at Pittsburgh as a Private. The 155th was in the 5th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Balsiger was wounded on June 18, 1864 during the renewed attacks on Petersburg.  On the 18th the 5th Corps was attacking near Rives’s Salient (where Joshua Chamberlain was wounded). He was discharged on June 8, 1865.  An original infantry “horn” insignia was found inside the box and is believed to also be Balsiger’s.   [jet]
