This Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword is identified to a Lieutenant Simpson of an unknown regiment. The sword is in used condition and was no doubt carried during the Lieutenant’s service.

The blade is dark throughout. The edge has four or five nicks with three just above the ricasso. None of the nicks are very deep. The false edge just above the ricasso also has some nicks. Both sides of the blade have a stopped fuller that begins at the top of the ricasso and runs down the center of the blade stopping approx. 9.25 inches from the point. There is no secondary fuller. The blade is devoid of any etching and the ricasso is blank on both sides and the top edge. The leather washer is still present at the ricasso base.

The hilt is in excellent condition. The grip has a good sharkskin body that is wrapped with 13 courses of a twisted brass wire outlined on the bottom with straight wire. All the wire is in place and tight. The pommel cap has a nicely carved oak leaf pattern on its face and sides. The knuckle bow and counterguard also have intricate floral and oak leaf designs. All the brass on the hilt has a nice light patina as does the wire on the grip.

The leather scabbard is in good used condition. The surface shows light to moderate wear throughout with definite signs of use. There are three or four small chips of surface loss, mostly near the top mount. There is also some very light surface crazing. The brass mounts have their rings with the top ring mount showing the most wear from use. Both mounts also have a light rich patina to match the hilt. The top mount/throat has a wonderful engraved presentation that reads “PRESENTED TO LIEUT. SIMPSON. I. DOHERTY.” The drag is of plain brass like the mounts.

Unfortunately just who Lieutenant Simpson or Mr. Doherty were is not known.
