This imported Civil War sword is an example of an original Model 1821 foot officer’s sword manufactured in France.  The plain, unembellished, brass-hilted sword is complete with two broken portions of its black leather scabbard adorned with brass throat.  Slightly curved, the steel blade measures 29 1/2” long and has a width of 1” with a 23” long unstopped fuller.  There are no military motifs nor any etchings on either side of the blade.  Two unknown maker’s marks are visible on the ricasso; an “S” within a shield and a “B” or “R” with crown within an oval.  Blade has areas of bright finish with larger areas of surface rust, oxidation, and minor pitting. There is one tiny edge nick at mid blade.

The cast brass hilt and knucklebow has the usual laurel motifs. Hilt is loose on the tang. The leather washer is missing.  The brass pommel is decorated with the same laurel pattern. Pommel is stamped “J.M. Davis from R.N. Bruce Battle of White Oak Swamp 1862”.  All brass has acquired a dark patina overall.  Only about 10% of the sharkskin wrap remains on the ribbed wooden handle. The fine double-twisted copper wire remains, all wound around the handle.

The original, leather scabbard is in poor condition overall; broken in two pieces. The brass throat is all that remains of the brass scabbard furniture, the drag is missing. The remaining portions of the leather are stiff and dry, but the finish is not flaking.

This is a great research project for the right person.
