A unique pattern ; the guard is intricately cast with a federal shield within a wreath and flanked by two mythological figures of Pegasus, a winged horse tamed by the hero Bellerophon and ridden into battle with the Chimera. He had the tail of a serpentine fish and a bull's horn on his head. The counter guard is designed with cornucopias spilling forth oak leaves and acorns. The cast brass grip has a stand of arms on either side. The ball shaped pommel boasts a leaf design and the knuckle bow has a wheat design. The blade is a tri cornered rapier style with only the Kings head mark of the Weyersberg factory. The blade washer is red velvet. The scabbard is three-sided leather with brass mounts. The reverse of the top mount reads: “Chaplin W.F. Snow / 5th Mass. Regt. / Presented by M. H. Sargent / and other friends.”

William Franklin Snow was a 23 year old student residing in Somerville, MA when he enlisted as a Corporal on 9/10/62. On 9/19/62 he mustered into Co. B, 5^th Massachusetts Infantry. On 10/3/62 he was promoted to Chaplain and transferred to 5^th Mass. Field & Staff. Mustered out at Camp Lander in Wenham, MA on 7/2/63.  On April 16, 1863, Snow gave the prayer and the keynote address for ceremonies held on the occasion of the raising of a new garrison flag.  Snow died on 1/11/71 in Lawrence, MA and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, MA. Further research certainly a possibility.  [ld]
