IMPORTED STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD WITH SCABBARD

Item Code: E2901

This is the Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer sword. It is single-edged with a false edge extending back about 11 inches from the point. There is a wide fuller which runs from the ricasso to the beginning of the false edge. The obverse side of the blade is decorated with etched designs which include an American eagle with a ribbon with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The reverse side bears the letters "U.S." The blade is marked “W. CLAUBERG SOLINGEN” with standing knight logo on the ricasso. The spine of the blade is marked “IRON PROOF”. The blade etchings retain very nice detail and feature gold wash in the recesses. The blade is bright with scattered pitting, more prominent pitting toward the tip.

This sword has a very nice, and rarely encountered, gutta-purcha grip wrapped with a double-twist of brass wire.

The guard is of the half-basket design filled with pierced floral designs and the letters "US." There is a single quillion atop the basket and a knuckle guard running from the basket back to the pommel.  All metal parts of the hilt are brass and show a wonderful dark patina. There is evidence of use; a few dings and scratches on the guard and the quillion is bent slightly downward. Otherwise, a very attractive sword.

Steel scabbard has a smooth, dark finish. No dents. The throat, two ring mounts, and drag are all brass. All scabbard attachments are tight. Drag shows some light wear. A maker’s mark, “S.G. BRIDGES / KEOKUK” is stamped on the drag.

In 1860, Samuel G. and his brother Braynard Bridges were jewelers in Keokuk, Iowa. Both were born in Massachusetts. By 1870 Samuel is still in the jewelry business. Perhaps Samuel imported swords to sell to local soldiers.

A very attractive sword and scabbard with several unique details.  [jet]
