Presented in relic condition is an original, US Model 1855 socket bayonet sans its leather scabbard was recently found at an estate sale in Rockland, Maine and verbally identified to Private Roscoe G. Robinson of the 4th Maine Infantry regiment. Roscoe resided in Jefferson, ME and enlisted in the army on June 15, 1861, the same day he mustered into service with Co. D, 4th Maine Infantry regiment.
These socket bayonets were made for the .58 caliber rifle / muskets and saw service from 1855 through the end of the Civil War. The term ‘angular socket bayonet’ refers to the type used by infantry soldiers. Shank of this “U.S.” marked weapon is at a right angle to the socket, setting the blade away from the bore of the muzzle. Triangular blade exhibits a tapered, spear shape and has a socket locking ring that helps secure the bayonet to the rifle / musket at the muzzle. This specimen totals 21” long, ¾” wide and tapers to a point. Bayonet surface is smooth and wears a moderate coating of old, hard rust. The 3” long socket shows a large impact point near the tip that compresses inward. Locking ring present but frozen in place with rust. Triangular tapered blade has a slight bend 7” from the point. A chance to acquire a Maine soldier’s M1855 bayonet for your collection.
