Civil War imported, identified Model 1850-foot officer’s sword in good original condition complete with its matching leather scabbard.   Identified to Urial M. Haskins of Freetown, Mass.  Haskins was an 18 year-old resident of Mericksville, MA when he enlisted in a three-months regiment, Co “G” of the 3rd Regiment, Mass Vol Militia Infantry on April 23, 1861 at Boston and mustered out on July 22, 1861. A year later, Haskins enlisted in a nine months unit with the same regiment in Co “A” and served until mustered out on June 26, 1863 at Camp Hooker, Mass. Haskins later assisted in recruiting the 22nd Company, Unattached Volunteer Infantry and mustered in as a 1st Lieutenant in August 1864.  He was appointed Adjutant of the Battalion at Readsville, MA and served there until the end of the war. He returned to Freetown and raised a family and worked in City government.

Imported from France, Haskins’ blade measures 29” long by 1” wide with a total length of 34½”.  Specimen has a is an unstopped fuller that measures 28” long while its narrow fuller stands in at 26” long. Blade flats are plain and feature no etching decoration nor do they appear to ever have etching.  Entire blade, with its dusky gray sheen appears to have been cleaned sometime ago and displays scattered peppery pitting overall as well as three tiny edge nicks near the point. Tip of the blade has a ‘spear-point style. Back of the blade shows what appears to be remains of the maker’s name, Klingenthal, in script.

The cast brass hilt features a shallow guard and knucklebow with a detailed cast face with a single band that displays a floral motif.  Hilt is slightly loose and looks never to have to have been cleaned as it wears a dark bronze patina.  Retains its leather pad at the ricasso.    Grips are wrapped in light sharkskin and brass double twist wire wrap. Skin strong and shows some scuffing and nodal chipping. Pommel is decorated with ornate, laurel leaf scrollwork and features a tiered domed brass cap. Casting of both the hilt and pommel is clean and well defined.

The black leather scabbard, with its brass furniture and drag, is unmarked saved for the identification on the upper band which reads “U. M. Haskins / Freetown Mass.”. Scabbard in fair condition overall with weak areas just above the drag and along most of the stitched seam. Body has a leather surface that exhibits a relative smooth and hard surface with most of the surface flaked off. Has both its all brass bands, sword suspension mounts, sword rings and drag as well as all three retaining screws intact.   Bands, mounts, drag all wear a bronze patina. Upper and lower bands are loose and show normal use. The scabbard drag has no angle wear. This original, identified Model 1850-foot officer’s sword example of an imported Civil War sword.
