Smith and Wesson produced about 117,000 revolvers between 1860 and 1868. The revolver is a 22 short rimfire caliber. The blued cylinder is a seven shot with a 3 3/16 inch blued octagon barrel. The brass frame is silver plated or nickel. The barrel is marked SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS and the cylinder was marked with 1855, 1859 and 1860 patent dates.

Offered is serial number 29626. Barrel has traces of original bluing with minor areas of light surface rust. Barrel markings are crisp but the cylinder markings are present but faint. Cylinder also has very minor pitting. Brass frame has 75$ or more of the original silver plating. Rosewood grips are original with traces of original lacquer. Bore has good rifling but does have some pitting.

Side plate is engraved H. A. Richer Co  8 Th Me. Ricker, who was from Patten, ME , was 26 years of age when he enlisted on 8/27/1862 as a private. The same day he mustered into Company “B” Maine 8th Infantry. Ricker was killed on 5/20/1864 at Ware Bottom Church, Virginia.

Ware Bottom Church, Va. May 20, 1864.  10th Army Corps. The Confederates made a determined attack on the pickets in front of Terry's and Ames' divisions, drove them back and occupied a line of the Federal rifle-pits.  Later in the day Gen. Gillmore, commanding the corps, ordered Howell's brigade of Terry's division, supported by the 6th Conn. and 142nd N.Y. of Turner's division, to retake the line.  Howell charged the rifle-pits, drove the Confederates out and reestablished the line but lost 149 in killed and wounded in the action. Richer was one of the 13 killed that day with the 8th ME Infantry.
