Item Code: 172-4446

Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball pistol commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model Revolver. This personal sidearm, in fine, original condition throughout, bears all matching serial numbers of #207245 indicating a production time of early to mid-1862. There is no remaining bluing or case colors, but all gunmetal bears a uniform dark gray color. Revolver is mechanically tight with crisp action. Octagonal barrel has numerous small dings and dents. Nice one-piece walnut grips with almost all original varnish. Shows very slight edge wear at the butt. Traces of the original silver wash seen in the triggerguard. The brass backstrap is engraved “Presented to Tho. Rofs (or Ross) by the Employees” and continuing onto the buttstrap is “G.W.R.R.”

This Colt handgun features a five-inch long barrel matched to a .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder that retains a moderate amount of the roll pressed engraving featuring the ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene. All nipples strong and unbroken. Cylinder safety pins all hammered down. All serial numbers match, including loading lever - barrel, cylinder, wedge, frame, triggerguard, and buttstrap. A clear and sharp “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” marks the top flat of barrel. “COLTS” remains visible of the standard “COLTS / PATENT” stamp on the left side of the frame. Most screw heads in good shape.

The “G.W.R.R.” could represent several rail road lines. In 1899, the Genesee and Wyoming in New York state was reorganized out of bankruptcy. In 1901, a railroad in Colorado named the Great Western opened. In the 1890s there was also a Galveston and Western in Texas and a Georgetown and Western in South Carolina.

Regardless of which railroad, this is a terrific example of a Colt pistol carried and used in the early days of the American railroad system.  [jet]
