Approximately 28,000 produced between 1861-1873. .36 Cal. 5 shot percussion revolver, with half fluted cylinder and 5.5” barrel. with casehardened frame, hammer and lever, Standard barrel marking: “Address Col. Saml. Colt New-York U.S. America.” Brass back strap and trigger guard. Barrel exhibits smooth dark gray patina; casehardened parts smooth and good. Serial numbers matching 22928 (wedge included). Grips exhibits light dings customary with age and usage. Crisp cocking and cylinder indexing. Bore bright with traces of pitting. Back strap ID inscription, scratched in & barely legible: “1 Lt. W.M Craft-Co. E 38 NJ”. Butt inscription, also scratched in, but entirely legible: “1st LT. W.M.C.”

William Craft enlisted as a private and was mustered into “I” Company, 3rd New Jersey Infantry, 4/27/1861, and was mustered out, 7/31/1861. He was later commissioned as 1st Lieutenant, and mustered into Co. “E”, 38th New Jersey Infantry, 10/1/1864, and mustered out at City Point, VA., 6/30/1865. Craft’s 3rd New Jersey was a 90 day unit that was held in reserve at the first Battle of Bull Run just prior to mustering out. His 38th New Jersey was assigned to garrison duty at Fort Powhatan of the James River til April 1865, followed by its mustering out at City Point, 6/30/1865. During service the unit lost 14 men to disease.
