This pocket Colt has a serial number of 132954 that matches throughout including the wedge pin. It is silver plated throughout. The octagonal barrel is 4.00 inches long and with light scattered wear to the silver plate. There is some light mottling over the surface as well as some very light pitting. The barrel has a good stamp on the top close to the breech that reads “ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW YORK CITY.” This marking is in two lines between brackets. The bore has good rifling but needs cleaning. The loading lever operates properly and matches the barrel in color and condition.

The five shot cylinder has approx. 60% of the cylinder scene. Like the barrel and the loading lever there are areas of light wear to the plated surface. All five nipples are present and are the originals. Stops show light to moderate wear. Cylinder spins freely at half-cock and wiggles just a tiny bit at full-cock. Action is good and crisp.

The frame and hammer are in good condition. The forward left side of the frame is weakly marked “COLT’S PATENT” while on the right side most off the silver platting has worn off. Triggerguard and grip frame still retain approx. 90% of the silver finish.

The walnut grips are free of major dings and dents and still show much of the varnish.

The backstrap of the weapon is engraved “B. WELCH FROM O.H.”

There was a Benjamin C. Welch who served in both the 40th New York and the 13th Massachusetts Light Artillery. This pistol came with two other items related to the 40th New York but more research is needed to be sure of the ID. Basic research on Benjamin Welch comes with the item.
