SOLDIER’S MEMORIAL FOR 78TH OHIO SOLDIER

$60.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 697-1314

This memorial is in rough shape and in need of a good home to preserve it for the future. The soldier the memorial honors died at the age of 45 years old in 1888 and his wife commissioned the memorial to be done in his honor. As already stated the document is in rough shape and really needs someone to care for it. There is a vertical rip running from the center bottom to a point three-quarters of the way up the piece. The bottom is also chipped and some material is missing out of the center and right corner. The top edge has three shorter tears and there is much surface dirt.

The document honors Sergeant John K. Baker of Company I, 78th Ohio Infantry. The memorial is in the shape of a proposed easel monument and is one of the more common memorials encountered. John Baker enlisted as a Corporal December 7, 1861 at the age of 18 years. According to the memorial he served at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Bolivar, Raymond, Champion’s Hill, Siege of Vicksburg, Canton, Kennesaw Mountain, Siege of Atlanta, Lovejoy Station and Bentonville. Baker was promoted Sergeant on January 25, 1865 and was mustered out July 11, 1865.
