This is the standard color document that is often encountered. It has a large spread winged eagle at the top center with flags and a US shield with “INFANTRY” printed across its face and flanked by a naval and a land battle scene. The main text area is flanked by two pillars with laurel leaves wound around them with Corp Badges in between the rows. A sailor with drawn sword and a cavalryman about to mount his horse flank the pillars. The bottom center has a bust of President Abraham Lincoln flanked by an artilleryman and an infantryman. Both bottom corners have battle scenes. The main text area says that this memorial is for Private Peter Aten who served for nine months in the 153rd Pennsylvania being engaged at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. At bottom is the dedication saying that the memorial was presented to Aten’s wife and children on February 25, 1911. The document is very clean and in wonderful shape. It comes in a great old frame that meas. approx. 27.50 x 38.50 inches with a 3.00 inch thick border covered in a floral pattern. The mat looks to be newer than the frame and is a light brown color.

Peter Aten was born in 1842 at Aten’s Ferry in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. At the time of his enlistment he was working as a Trimmer in Upper Mount Bethel. The 21 year old enlisted as a Private in Company G, 153rd Pennsylvania on September 22, 1862 and was mustered in on October 10th. As stated above, the regiment was engaged at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. They were part of the 11th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Private Aten was mustered out on July 24, 1863 at Harrisburg. After the war he was a member of the Lt. Ezra S. Griffin Post #139 of the GAR. He died on November 7, 1923 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Dunmore, Pennsylvania.
