CUT AND FRAMED MEMORIAL FOR 2ND INDIANA CAVALRY SOLDIER

$65.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: L14450

Soldier’s memorials came in different styles depending on when they were printed. This one is post-war and was done for a veteran of the 2nd Indiana Cavalry. When full sized this memorial pictured a large monument in the shape of an easel with statues and bas reliefs decorating its exterior while at center was a plain text square which held the veterans war information. This framed piece is just that central section of the memorial. Framed the item meas. approx. 11.50 x 13.50. The wood framed is “tiger stripped” with an interior border of stippled trim.

The text at center states that Sergeant Freeborn G. Murrer (also spelled Morrer) enlisted in Company B, 2nd Indiana Cavalry in January 1862. It states that the regiment was assigned to the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Cumberland and was engaged at Pea, Ridge, the Siege of Corinth, McMinnville, Galitin, Vinegar Hill and Perryville. Wintered near Nashville and guarded the Chattanooga & Nashville Railroad, fought at Talbot Station and was veteranized in January of 1864 and moved with Sherman towards Atlanta. Engaged at Resaca, Ackworth, Newman and Atlanta. Joined Wilson’s Raid and fought near Scottsville and West Point. The regiment then went to Nashville where Sergeant Murrer was mustered out in July of 1865.

At very bottom is a note that Freeborn Murrer presented this memorial to his wife and family. Murrer died in Madison County, Indiana on June 4, 1932 and is buried there in Gravel Lawn Cemetery.

During its service the 2nd Indiana Cavalry lost 167 men killed, wounded and captured and another 214 by disease.
