Item Code: 785-42

This is a stamped brass soldier’s ID disc with a spread-winged eagle with “WAR OF 1861” across the top and “UNITED STATES” across the bottom of the obverse. The reverse is stamped “J. HAYNES-CO. E-5TH-REG.-N.H.V.-CROYDON.” The badge is clean and bright and very readable. Obverse has some minor surface dirt.

Jeremiah Haynes (carried as HAINES on some rosters) was born in 1842 in Grafton, New Hampshire. On August 20, 1861 he enlisted as a Private in Company E, of the 5th New Hampshire Infantry. At the time of his enlistment Haynes is described as being 5’ 7” tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. Not long after his enlistment the 19 year old Haines married 21 year old Mary Stockwell on September 8, 1861. A little more than a month later on October 19th, Haynes was mustered in with his regiment. He left his wife and marched away to war on October 29, 1861.

While Haynes was with the 5th they saw action on the Peninsula at Fair Oaks, Peach Orchard, Savage’s Station, White Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill. At some point Haynes became ill and was sent to one of the General Hospitals in Philadelphia where he was discharged for disability on August 5, 1862.

After his service Haynes returned to his wife and lived in Croydon, New Hampshire until his early death at the age of 29 on July 1, 1871. He was buried in Four Corners Cemetery in Croydon.

With the tag is some very brief research on Haynes. Pulling his records from the National Archives will no doubt shed more light on his service.
