This brass ID disc is made of stamped brass. The obverse has a bust of an officer in profile to the left surmounted by “MAJOR GENERAL GEO. B. MCCLELLAN” with the bust flanked by the words “WAR OF 1861.” The area of the disc below the bust and inscription appears to be blank but upon closer inspection you can see the following scratched into the brass “W. W. BRIGGS / RUSSELL / WARREN CO. / PA.”

The reverse was filled out with a name and regiment but the Sutler then went over the information with a stamp for the letter “W” to obliterate the information. Nothing is readable.

Disc is in good used condition with a light patina throughout.

William W. Briggs was born in 1834 and the 1860 US Census shows that he resided in Corydon, Warren County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted as a Private in Company G, 211^th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 5, 1864. The regiment was eventually assigned to the 9^th Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw considerable action at Petersburg. In all the regiment lost 97 men killed, died of wounds and disease. No discharge date for Private Briggs is given and not much is known of his life after the war. He died in 1903 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Russell, Warren County, Pennsylvania.
