$150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 668-23

This album belonged to Miss Sybil Underwood who was born in 1841 and died in 1863.

The album has a brown leather cover embossed front and back with a wreath surrounding a book and pen with the word “AUTOGRAPHS” above them. On the front this decoration is gold embossed. Leather edges and spine show light to moderate wear but covers are solid.

The album meas. approx. 5.25 x 8.00 inches and runs 78 pages. Many of the pages have circular images of the person who signed the page of the album. These small images appear to have been cut from CDVs. There are a total of 19 images in the album, 9 men and 10 women. There are several pages that have written entries but no photo. A modern slip of paper in the album says these folks are from the New York State Normal School. The first image in the album is an unpublished view of New York resident and US Senator William H. Seward who at the time was serving as President Lincoln’s Secretary of State. The entries date from 1860-1862.

An early to mid-20th century inscription on the inside of the front cover reads “FROM SYBIL UNDERWOOD BORN JUNE 6, 1841 D. AUG 15 ’63 DAUGHTER OF AGNES UNDERWOOD, 1801 SPENCER, MASS HOME AT HARTFIELD NY. TAUGHT SCHOOL AT SINCLAIRVILLE, NY CHAUTAUQUA CO.”

Sybil Underwood is pictured in the album towards the back. Today she lies buried in Barnes Cemetery, Chautauqua, New York.

The item is in good condition and is an interesting artifact of civilian life during the Civil War.
