Item Code: 362-715

Very nice conditioned framed document for William M. C. Philbrick for service in the Civil War.

The top center of the document has a bust image of then Governor Joshua Chamberlain in the uniform of a Major General. Emanating from this portrait is a border of geometric design that encompasses the document. The sides of the border have bust images of Admiral David G. Farragut on the left side and Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant on the right.

Within the border below the image of Chamberlain is “STATE OF MAINE” flanked by a scene of a soldier leaving home and another of his return. Beneath this is a body of text printed over a patriotic shield. The text of the document attests to the loyalty and honor of the recipient whose name is filled in on a blank at the top, in this case Mr. Philbrick.

The bottom of the document has the Maine state seal at bottom center flanked by a navy battle scene and a Union army camp scene. The bottom of the document also bears printed signatures of John C. Caldwell as state Adjutant General and Joshua Chamberlain as Governor. Again these are not original handwritten signatures but printed signatures.

The document has browned with age. Framed it meas. approx. 21.50 x 17.00 inches. The document is still in the original period wood frame. The border of the frame is large. Approx. 2.00 inches wide. The reverse still retains the original wooden slats holding the document in place. Frame has some small scattered nicks on the inner and outer borders. Wire for hanging is present on back.

William M. C. Philbrick was born in Kittery, Maine. He was 21 years old when he enlisted as a Landsman in the US Navy at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on November 20, 1861. He was assigned to the USS MONONGAHELA. Philbrick was appointed a Yeoman on April 19, 1864, the same day he was discharged.

The USS MONONGAHELA was part of Admiral Farragut’s fleet. She took part in action at Port Hudson and blockade duty off the coast of Texas while Philbrick was aboard.
