James D. German was born in Milton, Vermont on July 4, 1840. He first enlisted in Company D, of the 13th Vermont on August 18, 1862. At the time of his enlistment he was described as being 5’ 8 ½” inches high, with dark brown hair, brown eyes, a light complexion and by profession a laborer.

He was present for the regiment’s only battle at Gettysburg which he came through without a scratch. He was discharged July 21, 1863.

German next enlisted in Company A of the 5th Vermont on January 11, 1864. During his time with the 5th he was assigned to the Ambulance Corps of the 1st Division, 6th Corps. He remained with them until his final discharge on June 29, 1865.

After the war he worked for the Central Railroad in New Jersey. He died on August 16, 1900 in Jersey City.  [ad]
