Three small pieces of original Army Bread or Hardtack.  This was the staple that fed the Armies during the Civil War.  Here are remnants of one “cracker” that were brought home by an Indiana soldier.  Large piece measures approximately 2 ½” x 1 ¾”.  Accompanying the tasty morsels is a pen and ink note that reads, “A piece of hard tack used in the Civil War   F.S. Wilson”.  Followed by “This piece of hard tack was brought home from the Civil War in June 1865 by Frank S. Wilson.  Co. I, 88th Ind. Vols Inft.”

Frank S. Wilson resided in Vistula, Indiana. He enlisted as a Private on August 9, 1862. He served in Company I, 88th Indiana Infantry for the duration of the war and was mustered out of service on June 7, 1865 at Washington, DC.   [jet]
