Brown leather covered Bible is embossed with a decorative design and gold lettering that reads, “CADET R.G. WITHERS, V.M.I., JULY 4TH 1878”. First page of Bible is inscribed in period ink, “CADET R.G. WITHERS, V.M.I. JULY 4, 1878 FROM G.H.S. ‘I HAVE PRAYED FOR THEE, THAT THY FAITH FAIL NOT”.

Bible measures 4” x 6” x 1 ¾’. It contains both the Old and New Testaments. Bible was published in 1877 by The American Bible Society.

Robert Gilliam Withers was born on December 25, 1858 in Dinwiddie in Lancaster County, Virginia. He graduated from V.M.I. and then attended the University of Virginia from 1879-80 where he studied law. He married Gretta Hayes in 1877 and had three children. He was a judge and the President of the Nevada Bar in 1914. Withers died in Nevada on November 19, 1929.  [sm]
