This first edition volume was written by Brig.-Gen. Silas Casey, U.S. Army. Published in New York by D. Van Nostrand in 1862. Title page reads, “BY AUTHORITY, INFANTRY TACTICS FOR THE INSTRUCTION, EXERCISE, AND MANEUVRES OF THE SOLDIER, A COMPANY, LINE OF SKIRMISHERS, BATTALION, BRIGADE, OR CORPS D’ARMEE”.

Silas Casey (July 12, 1807 – January 22, 1882) was a career United States Army officer who rose to the rank of Major General during the Civil War. He wrote the three-volume System of Infantry Tactics, including Infantry Tactics Volumes I and II, published by the army on August 11, 1862, and Infantry Tactics for Colored Troops, published on March 9, 1863. The manuals were used by both sides during the Civil War.

Measures 3 ½” x 5 ¼” x 1”. Text contains 279 pages, plus six pages listing other military publications for sale. Cover is completely separated from text, but text is still tightly bound. Pages have yellowed with age and show some spotting. None are missing. Small tear at lower corner of last few pages. Includes several illustrated fold-out pages.

Front page is inscribed, “LIEUT. GEORGE G. LOVETT”. Signature has faded, but is clear.

George G. Lovett was a resident of Philadelphia PA. He enlisted on 8/15/1862 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “G”, PA 119th Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant on 5/3/1863, then 2nd Lieutenant on 10/31/1863. He was listed as wounded 5/5/1864 at Wilderness, VA with a severe wound in left leg, which was amputated. He died of wounds on 5/30/1864 at Washington, DC. Lovett is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.  [SL]
