Single volume meas. approx. 3.75 x 5.50 inches. Green cloth hard cover with title embossed in gold on spine with spread-winged eagle and patriotic shield. Front and back covers have very light to moderate wear and surface dirt. At center of both is a small spread-winged eagle over a patriotic shield inside of a tooled linear decoration.

The title of the volume is “U.S. INFANTRY TACTICS FOR THE INSTRUCTION, EXERCISE, AND MANEUVERS OF THE UNITED STATES INFANTRY” published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. Philadelphia, 1862. Manual runs 450 pages with several fold out plates all of which are complete. Two of the folded plates show some wear. The rest of the interior is mostly clean and otherwise good. One page is torn but complete. None are loose.

First page has a period pencil inscription that reads “LT. E. DIVEN / ‘A.D.C.’ / 2ND BRIG., 2ND…”

Eugen Diven was the son of Colonel, and later brevet brigadier general Alexander Diven of the 107th New York. Eugene was 19 years old when he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company D, 60th New York Infantry on November 15, 1862. He served with his regiment in the 12th and 20th Corps until September 26, 1864 when he was promoted to Captain and assigned as Aide-de-camp of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 20th Corps. He resigned on April 5, 1865.

During Diven’s time with the 60th the regiment saw action at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Ringgold, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta.

After the war he returned home to Elmira, New York where he died on September 1, 1888. He is buried there in Woodlawn Cemetery.  [ad]
