Small softcover prayer book that meas. approx. 3.25 x 4.50 inches and runs 64 pages.
Pasteboard covers are embossed with linear and scrollwork decorations front and back. Center of the front cover is embossed with “RINGGOLD REGIMENT” in two lines while the back cover is embossed with “SOLDIER’S PRAYER BOOK” also in two lines. Covers show light wear and rubbing on corners.
Interior is tightly bound. The very last page, which was probably blank, has been torn out. All text is present.
Inside front cover has a period ink inscription of “Co. C” over “240-25.” The opposite page has a very nicely done, strong, period pencil inscription that reads “J. TACKNEY, CO. C, RINGOLD. REG.”
James L. Tackney (carried on the rolls as Tagney) was living in Buck’s County when he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 104th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 12, 1861.
Unfortunately nothing else is known about this soldier. The original muster roll viewed on-line just states that he was discharged and no date was given.
Getting records from the archives may reveal an interesting story. [ad]
