Bronze disk, 1.25” in dia. Obverse lettering: “AGAINST REBELLION 1861”, encircling union shield. Reverse lettering: “Eneas R. Emery. Chest[er]. Co., encircles “Co. I./ 119th/ Reg./ PA. VOL.” The disk contains a small lanyard hole. Overall lettering is sharp and crisp, but the reverse side contains various pin point nicks, while remaining entirely legible. Else VG.
Enos R. Emery was an 18 year old farmer who was mustered as a Private in Co. “I”, 119th PA Vols, in Philadelphia, 8/23/1862. On April 1863, he was detailed to Divisional Headquarters as a mule driver. On July 7, 1863 Emery left his company on the march to Williamsport (in pursuit of Lee following the rebel retreat from Gettysburg), and was declared a Deserter.
Invites further research. This is the first “deserters” identification disk the Horse Soldier has ever seen. What became of that deserter? [JP]
