MILITARY PASS AND STENCIL FOR 59TH ILLINOIS SOLDIER

This small group of items consists of a pre-printed military pass that meas. approx. 8.25 x 3.25 inches and is filled out in readable ink. The pass allows one H. M. Paddock to go into Nashville, Tenn. On May 4, 1864. The pass is good for 30 days. Pass has one tapped vertical crease at center and one horizontal crease. A small chip is missing out of the right edge and top. There is also a water stain at upper right corner.

Also in the group is a punched brass stencil that meas. approx. 4.00 inches long by 1.75 inches wide. Surface of the stencil is dark but it is in nice condition. Three lines of lettering reads “HENRY M. PADDACK / Co. B. 59TH. ILL. / VOL. INF.”

Henry M. Paddack, spelled PADDOCK in the records was born in Galesburg, Illinois but was living in Lee County, Iowa when he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 59th Illinois Infantry on July 17, 1861. At the time he was described as being 5’ 9” tall with dark hair, dark eyes and a dark complexion. By profession he was a farmer.

During Paddack’s time with the regiment it saw action at Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stones River, Lookout Mountain, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Pickett’s Mill and Kennesaw Mountain.

Paddack was discharged on July 11, 1864.
