The 3rd New Jersey was part of the famous New Jersey Brigade in the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. During Roberts’s time with the regiment it saw action on the Peninsula at Williamsburg, Gaines’ Mill and Charles City Crossroads. It was also engaged at 2nd Bull Run, Crampton’s Gap, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
