Published by Evans & Cogswell, Charleston, SC, 1863. Owner inscription, front eps, in ink—“Frederick Smith/ April 24/63”. [Later eps inscriptions—“Augustine F. Smythe/ June 1868”—"E. H. Smythe/ 12 Meeting St./ Charleston/S.C"]. 546 pp., 32 plates. In brown blind-stamped cloth, 7.75 x 5”, w/gilt spine lettering. Exhibits wear at the extremities, w/chipped-out section along the lower spine. Interior text displays light foxing throughout. Else VG, & solid, w/tight spine. Scarce Confederate manual. Fine collectible. Accompanied by documentation. Invites further research concerning Pvt. Smith & the 1st South Carolina Light Artillery, and perhaps the other names as well. [jp]
