The full title of this volume is “ELWOOD’S STORIES OF THE OLD RINGGOLD CAVALRY 1847-1865 THE FIRST THREE YEAR CAVALRY OF THE CIVIL WAR” The books author was Sergeant John W. Elwood and he published the volume in Cole Center, Pa. in 1914. The regiment was also known as the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry.

Covers are green cloth with gold embossed title on cover and spine. Cover is decorated with a gold embossed cavalry crossed saber insignia. Covers show light edge wear.

Volume runs 326 pages with 63 black & white portraits and illustrations. Binding is good.

Inside front cover has an old ink inscription that reads “ROBERT GRANT FURLONG, M.D. SON OF ETHEL GRANT FURLONG WHO WAS THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF NOAH GRANT AND ELIZA J. WICKERHAM GRANT.” There was an Andrew Grant who served in the 22nd and Noah Grant is found on the roster of the 18th Pennsylvania 30 day regiment.

The good Dr. who once owned this book has the following obituary on findagrave.com -

U.S. Congressman. He graduated from State Teachers College, in 1904, from Jefferson Medical College, in 1909 and practiced medicine in Donora, Pennsylvania. During World War I, he served as a First Lieutenant with the 218th Ambulance Company, 12th Division, U.S. Army. After the war, he practiced medicine, was burgess of Donora, (1922-26, 41-42) and postmaster of Donora, (1933-38). In 1943, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth Congress, serving until 1945. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of medicine and was Sheriff of Washington County, Pennsylvania.
