Volume is titled “REVISED REGULATIONS FOR THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES 1861 WITH A FULL INDEX.” The book is bound in a blue cloth with an embossed spread-winged eagle with sunburst and stars at center surrounded by geometric designs. This decoration is on both front and back covers. Spine has title in worn gold with a stronger eagle at bottom. Covers and spine are worn at edges and faded throughout. Cloth of both covers have light surface dirt. Binding is good.

Interior runs 559 pages with index and is a good readable copy. Manual was printed in 1861 in Philadelphia. Some pages have light foxing but nothing major. Pages have discolored some from age. All pages present.

Inside front cover has a bold period ink inscription that reads “BENJ M. ACKLEY / CANDAIGUA / ONTARIO COUNTY / NEW YORK / CO. K 126TH REGT. N.Y. V” The same inscription is repeated on the facing page with the following underneath “16TH HEAVY ARTILLERY JAN’Y 7TH 1864 / GLOUCESTER POINT MARCH 20TH, 1864 / YORKTOWN, VA. / ENLISTED JANUARY 7TH, 1864 AT ELMIRA / CHEMUNG.” This second inscription is done in a lighter ink than the one above it.

Inside the back cover is another inscription that reads “BENJ. H. ACKLEY / CANANDAIGUA / ONTARIO COUNTY / NEW YORK.”

Benjamin Harrison Ackley was born in New York on April 26, 1817. He was 44 years old when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company K, 126th New York Infantry on August 22, 1862. He served with the regiment at Harpers Ferry during the Antietam Campaign. It was there that Ackley was captured along with the rest of his regiment on September 15, 1862 and was paroled the next day. Ackley was discharged for disability on February 9, 1863.

On January 7, 1864 Ackley enlisted as a Private in Company L, 18th New York Heavy Artillery. Ackley’s Battery L served in the 10th Corps and saw service at Fort Fisher.

Ackley was finally mustered out at Fort Monroe, Virginia on May 23, 1865.

He died on December 9, 1874 and is buried in West Avenue Cemetery, Canandaigua, New York.  [ad]
