Hardcover volume that meas. approx. 6.25 x 4.00 inches. Book is titled “THE NAXIOUS INQUIRER AFTER SALVATION” by Rev. John Angell James.
The book is part of a series known as “THE SOLDIER’S LIBRARY” and is so marked on the spine. Covers are wrapped in brown cloth with embossed scrollwork. Title is in faint gold on spine. Covers show light wear. Interior is tightly bound and runs 212 pages.
Boldly inked inside front cover is “COM. I 48th REGT. P. V.”
The 48th Pennsylvania was raised in October 1861. The regiment spent most of its time with the 9th Corps and saw action at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. At the latter place it was the 48th Pennsylvania, whose ranks were filled by many former coal miners, who were tasked with digging the mine that was set off on July 30, 1864 to begin the battle of the Crater.
During its service the regiment lost 14 officers and 287 men killed, died of wounds and disease not to mention many more wounded but survived.
